Mountaineering and hiking is a delightful way to explore nature, whether you do it with friends and family, or by yourself. But there are things you should bring with you when you want to go hiking. And this depends on the location, weather forecast, and the length and difficulty of the route.
What to Bring on Hiking
While you’re packing, be sure to use this handy day hiking checklist to ensure that you don’t leave behind anything important.
- Backpack
- Hiking boots
- Food and water
- Navigation tools and whistle
- Knife
- First-aid kit
- Emergency shelter
- Hand sanitizer
- Prescription medications
- Menstrual products
- Lighter or matches
Clothing and Footwear
You want to make sure that you pack extra clothes and dress for the hiking conditions. If you’re hiking on sunny days, wear clothing that protects you against the ultraviolet rays and sunburns. Dress warmly and bring with you a raincoat if you’re walking in cold and wet areas. The terrain determines the type of footwear. Consider wearing boots for rocky and rugged trails. Some mountain trails are gentle and smooth, and for such, trail runners or hiking shoes are just fine.
Water and Food
Snacks, such as energy bars, are easy to eat and will give the energy need to hike and climb mountains. You can also pack some sandwiches and other heavy food if you will on the trail for extended periods. The amount of water to carry depends on the intensity and length of the trek, body type, age, and health conditions. With that said, pack some extra day’s supply of food and water, just in case something keeps you on the hiking trail for a long time.
Navigation
Bring a map and compass to help you with navigation. These tools are also handy when you get lost. A guidebook, GPS, personal location beacon, and altimeter watch are also helpful.
